Medication reminders not showing up on iPhone: how to fix it
When a reminder does not arrive, the app is almost never the reason: iOS decides whether a notification is shown, and it has half a dozen switches that can quietly stop one. Work down this list in order.
1. Notifications must be allowed
- Open Settings, tap Apps, then Pill Reminder.
- Tap Notifications and turn Allow Notifications on.
- Turn on Lock Screen, Notification Centre and Banners — a notification with all three off is delivered silently to nowhere.
- Set Banner Style to Persistent, so the reminder stays until you answer it.
- Turn Sounds on.
The app itself shows a warning on the Today screen whenever notifications are off, with a button straight to this screen.
2. Scheduled Summary holds reminders back
In Settings › Notifications › Scheduled Summary, an app in the summary has its notifications collected and delivered twice a day instead of when they are sent. Take Pill Reminder out of the summary, or turn the summary off.
3. A Focus can be filtering them
Sleep, Work and Do Not Disturb silence everything not on their allowed list. Open Settings › Focus, pick the Focus you use, tap Apps, and add Pill Reminder so its reminders come through.
4. Silent mode and the volume
With the ring switch on silent, every notification is quiet — the banner still appears, but nothing sounds. Check the switch on the side of the phone, and that the ringer volume is not at zero. For a medicine that absolutely must wake you, alarm-style reminders ring through both.
5. Low Power Mode and Background App Refresh
Reminders already queued still fire in Low Power Mode, but the app cannot top up the queue in the background, so a long stretch of it leaves fewer reminders planned ahead. Keep Background App Refresh on for Pill Reminder in Settings › Apps › Pill Reminder, and open the app now and then — opening it alone is enough to refill the plan.
6. Check the medicine itself
- An as-needed medicine never reminds you — that is what as-needed means.
- A medicine with an end date in the past has finished its course.
- An archived medicine does not remind.
- A “specific days” schedule only rings on the days you ticked.
FAQ
- The reminder arrives but makes no sound.
- Either the phone is on silent, a Focus is on, or Sounds is off for the app in Settings › Apps › Pill Reminder › Notifications. Check all three in that order.
- Reminders work for a while and then stop.
- iOS holds a limited queue of pending notifications, which the app refills whenever you open it or when iOS lets it refresh in the background. If the app has not been opened for a long time, the queue runs out — the last reminder in it says so. Opening the app refills it.
- Will reminders survive a restart?
- Yes. They are scheduled with iOS, not kept alive by the app, so they survive a restart, a locked phone and the app being closed by a swipe.
Pill Reminder helps you remember your medicines and keep a record of them. It does not give medical advice, suggest doses or check interactions. If you are unsure about a medicine or a dose, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Never miss a dose again
Pill Reminder reminds you at the right time, records the dose from the Lock Screen, looks after the whole family's medicines, and keeps a history you can hand to a doctor — all on your iPhone, with no account.
