Helping an elderly parent take their medicine
There are two different problems here, and they want opposite answers. Either your parent uses their own phone and everything must be simpler, or they do not, and the medicines live on yours.
On their phone: make it as small as possible
- Set up their medicines on their iPhone yourself, carefully — names, times, amounts, colours and shapes.
- Add a photo of each box, so there is no doubt about which one is which.
- Turn on Simple mode in Settings: the app becomes one screen of today's medicines with large buttons, and nothing else.
- Turn on the app lock, so leaving Simple mode needs Face ID or Touch ID — that is what keeps the setup from being changed by accident.
- Add the Next medicine widget to their Home Screen, big size, so what is due is visible without opening anything.
- On iOS 26, turn on alarm-style reminders for the doses that matter most, so a silenced phone does not silence them.
On your phone: manage it for them
Add them as a family member and put their medicines under their profile. You get their reminders, named, and you record the dose when you have seen them take it. This works when you live together, visit daily, or are on the phone at the same time each evening.
Settings worth changing either way
- Turn on the second reminder, and give it a longer delay — an hour rather than thirty minutes.
- Use colours and shapes that match the real pills.
- Keep the medicine names visible on the Lock Screen if nobody else sees the phone; hide them if it is on a table in a shared home.
- Use iOS's own text size and Bold Text settings — the app follows them.
What this cannot replace
A phone reminds; it does not watch. If someone genuinely cannot be relied on to take the right tablets, a weekly pill organiser filled by someone else, or a pharmacy blister pack, is the thing that makes it safe. The app is good at the remembering and the record, not at the supervision.
FAQ
- Can I see whether my parent took their dose on their own phone?
- No — there is no syncing between phones, and no account. If you need to see it, the medicines have to be on your phone under their profile.
- Is Simple mode available without PRO?
- Yes. Simple mode and the app lock are free; family profiles and alarm-style reminders are PRO.
- What if they tap Taken without taking it?
- Then the record says taken. No app can tell the difference — which is why, past a certain point, a filled pill organiser matters more than a phone.
Pill Reminder helps you remember your medicines and keep a record of them. It does not give medical advice, suggest doses or check interactions. If you are unsure about a medicine or a dose, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Never miss a dose again
Pill Reminder reminds you at the right time, records the dose from the Lock Screen, looks after the whole family's medicines, and keeps a history you can hand to a doctor — all on your iPhone, with no account.
